Black cloth boards with titles on spine in gilt and green; gilt on Hemingway's stamped signature on front with minor loss. Rear cover has some discoloration along fore edge. The dramatic, brutal story of Harry Morgan, an honest boat owner who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat. Pencil inscription to front fly leaf, small embossed stamp on same page. Record # 379610
Synopsis
To Have and Have Not is a 1937 novel by Ernest Hemingway about Harry Morgan, a fishing boat captain who runs contraband between Cuba and Florida. The novel depicts Harry as an essentially good man who is forced into blackmarket activity by economic forces beyond his control. Initially, his fishing charter Johnson tricks Harry by not paying back the money he owes him, and then escapes the country by airplane before Harry can realize what is going on.
