Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo and Co, 1850. 1st edition. Wraps. Very Good -. 1st edition. A Very Good - copy. 8vo., 266 pp., with 27 pages of advertisements at the end. The Sondley Reference Library added cloth backed stiff board to the original wraps, by attaching them with cloth tape at the joints. Sondley Library book plate on the new boards; blind stamp on the title page and cat number stamp on the copy right page. Text clean. Tight. Lanman's career included service as librarian for the U.S. War Department (1849-1850), private secretary to Senator Daniel Webster (1850-1853), librarian and the head of the returns office in the U.S. Interior Department (1853 and 1855-1857), and librarian for the U.S. House of Representatives (1861-1865) He was also the librarian for the City of Washington Library, the American secretary to the Japanese legation, and assistant assessor for the District of Columbia.
The word Haw-ho-noo was originally applied to America by the Iroquois Indians, and signifies the country upheld on the back of a turtle.
