About This Item

New York: Rand, McNally & Company, 1899 Slightly later printing (first published in 1893). 527pp. Illustrated throughout with plates, illustrations, map; appendices. Publisher's decorated dark blue cloth stamped in gold and silver. The slightest of rubbing to spine ends and corners, but a very fine, bright copy. A superior copy of this often-reprinted work. Glazier explored the headwaters of the Mississippi in 1881, and claims the discovery of the true source of the Mississippi lying immediately to the south off Lake Itasca, a small lake which he named, of course, Lake Glazier. The author discusses all the early explorations and explorers including Cabeca de Vaca and Hernando de Soto, Marquette and Joliet, La Salle, Hennepin, et al..
