Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, 1917. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition. Illustrator: Photographic. Preface by author, note and list of illustrations. Sepia toned photographic frontispiece, with lightly browned and foxed tissue guard. The text is illustrated with sepia toned photographs to out. Brown coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured embossed titles to the front panel and back strip. There is a sepia toned photographic square cameo to the front panel. A novel set in Japan in 1917 about how Conservative Japanese women are the guardians of the old ideals of absolute obedience and loyalty to the parents, the clan and then her country, and their imperative to pass this belief on to the next generation of young women. Softening of the back strip edges with rubbing and a little fraying of the book corners. Some rubs to the book panels and there is residue of paper stuck to the rear panel. Tanning and a little foxing of the text block edges and age toning of the pages. Previous owners name to the top edge of the free front end page. The selfsame previous owner has marked passages from page 77-78 in a pencil. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [4], V - X, [2], 3 - 269, [1] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
