About This Item
[Brantwood, Coniston, Windermere: The Author, April 1854].. [2]pp. Single sheet octavo handbill (22 x 14.5 cm), printed recto and verso. Dust-toning at extreme fore and bottom edges of recto, a few small nicks, and a couple of short, creased tears at the lower edge, very good. A rare leaflet by Linton in support of the revolutionary movements in Poland as an important buffer against Russia. As opposed to the "dining and dancing Poles" in the UK, "Lord Dudley Stuart's Literary Society of the Friends of Poland" in support of the monarchy, Linton asserts: "The revolutionary party is the people's party. It represents Poland. Help it." He identifies the latter as "the allies of the European Democratic Committee, the friends of Mazzini and Kossuth, [and] the central Committee of the Polish Democratic Society." It is probable that Linton printed this piece on his own press. OCLC locates copies at the British Library, Yale, and the National Library of Australia. NCBEL III:533. OCLC: 61658116 & 560788740.
