Set in London and the English countryside, tale of two, long separated childhood friends now in their thirties, and both at crossroads in life. As the story opens, art historian Henry Marshalson quits teaching in America, returns to England upon the death of elder brother Sandy and inheritance of the family estate. Cato Forbes is a Roman Catholic priest at lost upon falling in love with the 17 year-old boy, Beautiful Joe. Their stories, separate at the opening of the novel, converge and intertwine to include ransom and violent kidnapping of the thriller genre. Other complex protagonists are Henry's mother and her alliance with Lucuis, Cato's sister who has long loved Henry, and, Stephanie, deceased brother Sandy's mistress and former prostitute and stripper, to whom Henry loses his heart to. Many a life, each in its unique journey in time, change.
Synopsis
Iris Murdoch was born in Dublin in 1919 of Anglo-Irish parents, grew up in London and was educated at Oxford and Cambridge. She is the author of 26 novels and several works of philosophy. She died in 1999.
