About This Item

Washington DC: United States Government, 1931. Framed under glass. Very Good +. One leaf affixed with the Seal of the Department of Justice. Exposed frame area measures 15.5" x 11.5". Signed by the President of the United States of America, and the United States Attorney General. Some slight spotting to document. Presented in a bat-wing frame, with light scratches and slight chipping consistent with age. Signed in full in ink by Herbert Hoover and US Attorney General William Dewitt Mitchell. In 1926, when Albert White was first appointed U.S. Marshal in the Territory of Alaska, it was in a decade really more akin to the frontier West, given Alaska's belated exploration and settlement. Crime associated with rugged pioneerism was often, at that late date, met with frontier justice. Exacerbating matters, prohibition, was still in effect. Proximity to Canada led to rampant smuggling operations delivering liquor across the border to the Territory of Alaska. During his first term Marshal White acquitted himself so well he was re-appointed by Herbert Hoover, by agency of this document, in 1931. Bookseller inventory R1118150X1B.
