About This Item

London, 1931. Number 84 (?) of 100 copies. Title leaf, contents leaf, facsimile "Note by Max," and 5 mounted color plates, each plate SIGNED by the subject of the caricature. 1 vols. Folio. Parchment-backed portfolio; plates loose as issued. Split along fold of portfolio flap, else near fine. Number 84 (?) of 100 copies. Title leaf, contents leaf, facsimile "Note by Max," and 5 mounted color plates, each plate SIGNED by the subject of the caricature. 1 vols. Folio. SIGNED by Coward, Cochran, and Cast. Rare portfolio commemorating Coward's hugely successful 1929 operetta. "Sentiment is out of fashion," says Beerbohm in his note. "Yet Bittersweet, which is nothing if not sentimental, is not a dead failure ... Sentiment goes on; unaffrighted by the roarings of the young lions and lionesses of Bloomsbury, Bittersweet goes on, too; and Mr. Cochran [Charles Cochran, the producer] (being a sentimentalist), has wished that his survival should be commemorated by me in some sentimental drawings, which are here submitted to you."
Along with Coward, there are portraits of Peggy Wood, Georges Metaxa, Ivy St. Helier, and Cochran - each signed by the subject on the mount.
