About This Item
Amsterdam: Uitgeverij Contact, 1947 Second edition (issued December 1947, six months after the first). Publisher's blue-gray and red paper-covered boards; in the original dust jacket, title in white script to front panel and spine, "Anne Frank" in blue, multi-toned gray background. A very good copy, some light spotting to text block edges and endpapers, light sunning to extremities, contemporary inscription to front free endpaper; in a very good dust jacket with early reinforcement (jacket almost imperceptibly adhered onto paper, with wear and chipping uniformly to jacket and paper backing), wear and a few short closed tears to extremities, some chipping to spine ends. Overall, a sturdy copy of this scarce second edition in its original dust jacket. In 1942, Otto Frank and his family went into hiding in a secret attic in a factory building in Amsterdam. His youngest daughter Anne passed her time writing, filling a diary and several notebooks with her innermost feelings, reflections of the world around her, daily activities, and dreams for her future. Though they evaded capture for over two years, the family was eventually discovered by the Nazis, arrested, and deported to concentration camps. After the war, Otto Frank was liberated from Auschwitz; he was the only survivor of the Frank family. When Otto returned to Amsterdam, family friend Miep Gies gave him Anne's diaries, which she had kept hidden after the family was found. Inspired by Anne's writings, he published them under the title Het Achterhuis. Dagbrieven van 14 juni 1942 tot 1 augustus 1944 (The Secret Annex. Diary Letters from June 14, 1942 to August 1, 1944.) The first edition, issued in a print run of just over 3,000 copies, marked the first time that Anne's words were read by the public. The book was a commercial and critical success; second and third editions of Anne's diary were printed within a year of the first.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
