About This Item
Amsterdam, 1720. Title translated:" The Great Mirror of Folly, Showing the Rise, Progress, and Downfall of the Bubble in Stocks and Windy Speculation, Especially in France, England, and the Netherlands in the Year 1720. This copy is missing the title-page (provided in facsimile). It contains fifty-two of seventy-six plates. Exact number of plates is not certain, reported from 55 to 74, no two books are the same! All plates in our example are copper-plate engravings, well-struck with a good margin at plate extremities. They are individually bound, so that they may be opened fully within the book. Many are double-page. All are very clean nad nicely-struck. They are a satirical look at the blundered experiences of John Law, wild speculation in financing stock to exploit the Freench colonies in America! Our copy has hand-numbered plates numbered: 1,5, 7-9, 13-15, 19-23, and 28-66, fifty-two in number. Please see photos. There are several other copies on the market at this time, most in finer bindings and containing more engravings. We have priced the book at $40.00/ plate. We are also providing research material, translating the captions of each plate from Dutch to English. . First Edition. Green Paper-Covered Boards. Covers Worn/No Dust Jacket. Folio.
