About This Item
London: Phaidon, 1979. First Edition. . Paperback. Very Good. First edition. Large paperback. 33 × 25.5cm, unpaginated. "One of Hieronymus Bosch's most beautiful triptychs, The Garden of Earthly Delights, represents a landscape stretching from the Garden of Eden on the left wing, across the rolling central plain full of primitive men, birds and animals disporting themselves, to the cold, dark and murky wastes of Hell on the right wing. The painting is large, the three panels together measure 220 × 389cm, and apart from those who have had the good fortune to see the original in the Prado in Madrid, very few readers will ever have been able to study and enjoy the teeming details of this extraordinary vision, depicting the Fall of Man, from the creation to the corruption in the time of Noah, and the horror of Hell. The painting is reproduced in 56 double-page spread details which together recreate in brilliant colour the whole work. Further illustrations show each of the three panels and the superb grisaille of the Third Day of Creation painted on the back of the two wings, thus allowing the reader to place the details in the context of the whole. An introduction places the painting in Bosch's oeuvre, describes it and discusses some of the various interpretations which have been given to it." Condition: This copy is in very good condition.**PLEASE NOTE: As this is a heavy book, postage may have to be increased for overseas (non-UK) buyers, or decreased where appropriate.
