Pierre Charlevoix was an 18th-century French Jesuit writer known for his informational surveys of Jesuit missionary voyages around the world. He published reports on voyages in Paraguay, Brazil and other South American countries, as well as voyages in Asia even though he himself never visited these locations. One of his best works was his "History of Japan". This work provides a comprehensive overview of Japanese history which proved to be a catalyst for the western world understanding Japanese culture.
