About This Item

1617 1ed King Louis IX France CRUSADES Joinville Beaulieu Menard RARE Knights Louis IX of France was a 13th-century king, known for his 54 year reign of the French throne. His rule was highlighted by reforms made to the royal justice system, the annexation of Maine and Provence, and perhaps most notably his leadership in the 7th and 8th Crusades. The majority of what we know of Louis IX's life comes from Jean de Joinville (the king's counselor) and his "Life of Saint Louis". Joinville offers details on the king's life and reign, but the majority of the book focuses on the Seventh Crusade and Louis's time spent in the Holy Land during the wars. This 1617 first edition of Joinville's "Louis IX" was collected and edited by Claude Menard. This fine edition was bound with, as all examples of this edition are, Georffroy de Beaulieu's "Sancti Ludovici francorum regis, vita" – a continuation of Joinville's work.
