Jacques Bossuet was a French bishop known for his anti-protestant sermons and speeches. He was highly favored by Louis XIV for his views that the king was divinely appointed by God. Many scholars agree that Bossuet's most famous and important work was his 'Variations of the Protestant Church;' a work that focused on the lack of structure and organization within the Protestant Church. This work began a literary battle between Catholics and Protestants in which Protestants began identifying flaws and problems in the Catholic Church. This fight drew the attention other important figures such as Liebniz.
