Strassburg: Georg Husner, 1486. Good. Folio, old leather boards 29 cm tall, pages are 28 cm tall, 87 leaves (possibly lacking last blank; there is a last blank but it may be slightly later), text in two columns mainly of 43 lines with handcolored initiial letters and some rubrication, very good, mild marginal worming and faint smudges from handling. In old cloth "dust jacket" hiding the binding, with ownership marks of an M. Woodhull dated 1784 on verso of marbled flyleaf, with statement that this was purchased at the sale of the library of the Duc de la Valliere (Louis César de La Baume Le Blanc, d. 1780: noted bibliophile and military man; he was considered one of the greatest bibliophiles of his time and his library was sold in three stages). Last copy at auction was a copy in modern vellum with 88 leaves at Christie's in 1991, for $2420 including the hammer. From what we can tell, the leather binding is scuffed and worn including some scraping and abrasions to top of rear cover. Goff C-733. This was the most popular history of the Trojan Wars, authored in 1287 by a 13th century Italian judge who lived at Messina and was based on the earlier works of Dares Phrygius and Dictus Cretensis.
