About This Item
New York City: Pudney & Russell Early days in Clarke County, GA, including the present or past communities of Athens, Farmington, Salem, Watkinsville, Winterville and part of Bogart, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 28 page booklet, reprinted from two rare books: the Rev. George White's Historical Collections of Georgia and Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside, a WPA publication. The spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading.A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color cover. The excerpt from White's book covers the development of this area until the publication date of 1854, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: History of the University of Georgia, the names of early settlers; population breakdown of the 1850 census; early manufacturers, including Athens Manufacturing Company, Princeton Manufacturing Co., Mars Hill Factory, Georgia Factory, Pioneer Paper Mill and Watkinsville Tanning Co.; Distinguished Men -- Rev Hope Hull, Rev. Moses Waddel, president of Franklin College 1819 to 1829, Judge Joseph Henry Lumpkin, Gen. David Meriwether, Revolutionary War veteran, Josiah Meigs, and others; and other interesting bits of history and trivia. In the WPA section, there is additional background on the University, a map of Athens and a guide to points of interests. Besides the campus highlights, sites include the Double-Barreled Cannon, and the homes of Howell Cobb, Gen. T.R.R. Cobb, Joseph Henry Lumpkin, James Camak, Benjamin H. Hill, Henry Grady and others..
