He married the niece of Inigo Jones and became his personal assistant from 1628. On Jones' death in 1652, Webb inherited both a substantial fortune and his library of drawings and designs. In 1654 Webb designed the first classical portico on an English country house at The Vyne in Hampshire. This book is the first extensive treatise on the Chinese language in any European language. In it Webb proposes that the Chinese language was the language that was spoken throughout the world before Noah's flood. He also discusses Chinese culture and the ancient origins of the Chinese empire.
