About This Item

London: Rafe Newberie and Henrie Denham, 1584. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. The First Welsh History. First edition, quarto, in attractive full red grain morocco, some decorative gilt tooling, corners rubbed. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling & titles, edges rubbed. Internally, engraved title page laid down, (qviii), 22 pp (Description of Cambria), 356, 361-364, 357-360, 365-401 pp, [1], [odd pagination, but complete to here], a.e.g., 1lacks the colophon, blanks and the end index, upper joint going at head, numerous woodcuts, contemp. ink signature of James Smith with some marginal notes, tipped in 1 page ms note from George Ormerod to fep (ref Lowndes) along with his bookplate to fpd, a.e.g.. (177*130 mm). (ESTC S121940. Sabin, 40914. Luborsky & Ingram. Engl. illustrated books, 1536-1603, 4606). Based on the work of Humphrey Llwyd and John Price who themselves used material by Mathew Paris, Nicholas Trivet and Geffrey of Monmouth. Our copy has the distinction of being Sir George Ormerod's copy but although his ms note suggests that this copy collates as "Lowndes" it does, in fact, lack the leaves of index at the end!. This rare work which includes a reference to Madoc's 12th century voyage to Florida, was largely based on Caradog's chronicles of Welsh History and Legends. Caradog was apparently one of the brilliant band of men of letters that gathered around Earl Robert of Gloucester. Miss-numbering at: 212/194; 218/208; 219/209; 274/174; 398/399; 399/398. A very noble fragment of an important book.
