Ministerio da Educacao, 1940. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. 424 pages with 55 leaves of plates, most folded, of portraits, maps, views, etc. Plates are reproduced from the 1647 Latin edition. In 1647 Barleu wrote an account of the Dutch colonial empire in Brazil inspired by the leadership of John Mauricio of Nassau, who was appointed governor of the Dutch West India Company in 1637 and continued as governor until 1644. Limited edition. First edition thus. A very fine copy in full leather covers over boards with gold insignia and lettering. Covers with bevelled edges. Spine with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Binding by A. V. Emmott & Sons, Houston. Presentation copy signed by the Minister of Education with typed presentation (translated from Portugeuse): 'Rio, 7.7.40 Mr. Judge Florencio de Abreu, I am pleased to offer you an example of the work of Caspar Barleu - 'Brasil under the rule of Joao Mauricio de Nassar', translated and published by the Ministry of Education. With the expression of my high intellectual appreciation, (signature follows).' Presentation slip bound in preceding the half-title page. The presentation slip and front free endpaper have rust marks from removed paperclip.
