New York: Antiquarian Press Ltd, 1960. Reprint. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Good. 8vo. Pp. xxxviii, 775. Bibliography, index. Illustrated with black line maps in the text and one fold-out map tipped in. Introduction by Ernest Gruening. Brick red cloth, titles stamped in gilt on black label on the spine, top edge gilt. In the original unprinted glassine jacket. Owner ink stamp and ink annotations on endpapers. Jacket creases and edges chipped, age toned. Reprint of the 1886 first edition. Bancroft engaged (but did not credit) Petrof to research and translate Russian documentation of its eastward expansion from the 16th century, and his writing constitutes the first half of this volume. Bates wrote the last third. Gruening was first U.S. Senator from Alaska and ex-governor of the Territory. Annotation reads in part "Deep Creek Look-out near village of Ninilchik, July 1961.
