About This Item

General rubbing to the cloth and a couple narrow white scuffs to the spine; lower corner of the blank front free endpaper torn away and most of the rear blank endpaper as well. Ownership signature top edge of title page. Occasional foxing to the text. History of the transatlantic telegraph cable. The Atlantic Telegraph Company was established by Cyrus Field in 1854 and the first project, the laying of telegraph cable from Canada to Ireland, was completed in 1858 thus connecting Europe and North America for the first time. The first official telegraph was from Queen Victoria to President Buchanan. This cable, however, only lasted for three weeks before burning out from excessive voltage. The second cable was laid in 1865 with significant improvements over the previous project. This history deals in great detail with Fields' first attempt and its aftermath; it was published shortly after the 1865 cable project was completed.
