* VOLUME I (1877; In 2 Books - Parts I and II): "The narrative embraces the condition of Europe which contributed to this remarkable result, the origin and birth of the city in which we take so much pride, its early vicissitudes, the various steps of progress through which it became powerful, the connection of causes and effects, the rise of churches, schools, colleges, charities, and other institutions, the machinery, commercial and political, with all its crudities, breakages, friction, and modern improvements, ever producing unlooked-for events, its wars and rumors of wars, its public characters and foreign relations, and its social thread, knotting and tangling, but yet running through all the years, spinning its own way and coiling itself into every feature of the structure, - the cable, indeed, to hold the multiplicity of parts together."
* VOLUME II (1880; In 2 Books - Parts I and II; 1775-1880): The Threshold of the Revolution; The Declaration of Independence; Momentous Events; The Year of Battles; Varied Events; The Conclusion of the War; New York City after Pease was Established; New York City the Capital of the Nation; Removal of the Seat of Government; President Washington's Second Term; New York City at the Close of the Century; The New Political Era; Institutions and Inventions; The Rising Storm; The War; The Final Struggle; Peace and Prosperity; Progress of the City; Introduction of Croton Water; Concluding Chapter.
Condition:
The set is in overall very good condition both inside and out with only some light shelf wear to the bottom edges of the boards. All volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. The interiors are clean with no notable issues found. Some very light wear to the corners and to the bands on the spines.
