About This Item
Originally Glenn County was part of Colusa County, so it is appropriate that the story of the early days of these two California counties be combined. The colorful history of these counties is recalled in this NEW 108-page spiral-bound booklet, comprised of excerpts from Historic Spots in California, (1932), California, a Guide to the Golden State (1939), Glenn County Yesterdays by Milly Latta (1965), and Guide to the County Archives of California by Owen C. Coy (1919). The full-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 8.5 x 11" 60# opaque paper. Some of the towns mentioned are: Willows, Maxwell, Williams, Colusa, Arbuckle and Orland. Among the many subjects included are: Indian tribes of the area; Tribal boundaries; Indian folklore and life style; Early Spanish, Russian and American visitors; The Expedition of Jedediah Smith; the Rancho of John Marsh; the first Wagon Train; Sutter's Fort, the Hock Farm, Land grants; General John Bidwell's explorations; a Plan for California; John Charles Fremont; Spanish cattle industry; the Gold Rush; Founding of new towns -- Colusa, Butte City and Monroeville; Judge William Ide (called ''the first unselfish man in California"); Changes over the years; Steamboats on the Sacramento; Some towns prosper, some towns die out; War and Natural Disasters; Dr. Hugh J. Glenn and his ranch Jacinto; the Plight of the Indians; More towns develope -- Kanawha, Elk Creek, the Willows, Germantown, Orland, Fruto; Chinese Immigration; New farm equipment, electric lights, telephones; Formation of Glenn County from northern Colusa; Irrigation attempts; William Semple Green "the father of irrigation,"; Hamilton City; Schools; and numerous other interesting bits of history and trivia. The Guide to the archives may be of benefit to serious researchers. It enumerates hundreds of documents that were available in 1919. For instance under Supervisors Records is a listing for "Burial of Ex-Union Solders, etc., 1902 -- date, 1 v. (I)" . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
