About This Item

Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good Plus. First edition. Large folio hardback, bound in the original yellow cloth with printed titling to spine. 35 × 27cm, 471pp. Signed and dedicated by David [Kunzle] to the ffep. A comprehensive history of the early comic strip, defined in this book by David Kunzle as sequences of four or more separate images with subservient text, published for moral or topical propaganda. This definition allows straight news reporting in pictures to be omitted. The sheer breadth of this study is best illustrated by the table on contents: 1. Religious Propaganda c1450-1550, 2. France and the Netherlands c1560-1620, 3. The Thirty Years War 1618-1648, 4. The Dutch Republic 1653-1689, 5. England c1605-1710, 6. Private Crime, Public Execution, 7. Vices and Follies, 8. Marriage, 9. Rakes and Harlots, 10 Hogarth, 11. Narrative Art after Hogarth, 12. The Caricature Comic Strip 1787-1826. The book is illustrated throughout, including fold-out images, which have been gathered from the major academic libraries across Europe. The author provides a clear description of the main collections and a comprehensive index to this outstanding study. Condition: A good copy and rare to find signed. There is light rubbing to the corners, and light spotted foxing to the page edges. There is some tanning to the margins throughout the book but it otherwise remains in strong readable condition.**PLEASE NOTE: As this is a heavy book, postage may have to be increased for overseas (non-UK) buyers, or decreased where appropriate.
