About This Item
First Edition (1848), Early Printing. In 2 volumes, complete. First issue, State B: the period after the word 'integrity' at line 20 on page 467 of the second volume is missing. The classic work on the subject, going through scores of editions, Prescott's "Peru" was one of the standard household books for the later part of the Nineteenth Century. A very good copy comparatively speaking.
First edition of this classic narrative history, a landmark when it first appeared in 1847. BAL refers to copies such as this one, with no printer's imprint present on the copyright page of the first volume, as 'State B' of the two states of the first edition issued (no priority between the two is given). BAL 16346. GRIFFIN 2975. SABIN 65272.
Frontispiece in each volume, map of Peru, facsimile of two signatures of Pizarro. Original brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt on spine clean and bright and clear, some edgewear present, scattered foxing in both volumes including illustrations and title page, heavy foxing to yellow endpapers in both volumes. Prior owners' signatures on the front free endpaper and half-title page. 8vo. Vol. 1 527 pp.; Vol. 2 547pp.
