London: Reeves & Turner, 1881 First edition, limited to 500 copies (not numbered). Hardcover book . Buff cloth, with gilt tiles to spine, and brown stamped picture to front. Black endpapers. Introduction plus 272pp. With b&w illustrations in plates and in text, many being woodcuts by Thomas & John Bewick and their pupils (also reproductions from Cruickshank and others). The introduction details the research that Hindley undertook for this book, involving the use of Thomas Hugo's collection of Bewick illustrations (includes reproductions of Bewick prints from the Hugo auction catalogue), and James Catnach publications. Darkened and soiled covers with old marks, and browned spine, frayed spine ends and bumped corners. Binding slack with hinges cracked and one page loose. Most pages clean, with browned edges, some marginal handling marks. Gift inscription on flyleaf. A Good copy. Pictures available.
