About This Item
London: T. Cadell, 1794. David Hume's "History of England," written between 1754 and 1761, is rightly considered a masterwork; true lovers of history will read it today. The Scottish novelist Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) felt duty-bound to advance Hume's "History" to a more recent era. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of Volume II only of an eight-volume set. Full leather binding; two black labels; with titling and decorations in gilt. Clean text; 389 pages; with two engraved plates. The text is exceptionally bright, clear, and supple. Typically rubbed at the margins; bumped; chip to head of spine. Starting to split at the edges of the spine, but holding nicely. Despite these flaws, the book is attractive, with a nice presence.. Later Printing. Full-Leather. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
