Engraved title page of first volume reads, "The History of England: From the Text of Hume and Smollett to the Reign of George the Third; and thence continued to the Present Time by Thomas Gaspey, Esq." Eight imperial 8vo volumes, each of brown half leather with cloth sides, the spine compartments lettered and ornately tooled in gilt; decorative endpapers; all edges gilt; pp. 834 + 12, (ii) + 842 + 22, (ii) + 848, (ii) + 352 + xii, (ii) + 864, (ii) + 864, (ii) + 824, (ii) + 1110 + xi; all volumes liberally illustrated with engraved plates. Covers somewhat worn; moderate foxing throughout; trace of surface dirt here and there; some leaves have worked loose and have frittered edges; pp 37-44 missing in first volume, pp. 121-128 misbound in fourth volume (after p. 136), pp. 7-8 loose and ragged in second volume of new series, with some loss of text. Fully collated. A good set. .
