About This Item

London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1869. First Edition. Octavo. In two volumes. (2)pp. publisher's ads, xviii, 498 and x, 423pp. One of Mark Twain's favorite books and one he used in writing A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. There is a heavily annotated copy in the Mark Twain Collection. While this book has been among the most influential books of the 19th century, it dealt honestly about the role of women in the last part of Volume 2. Earlier women were objects to be owned, if not outright purchased Though there was a somewhat more elevated role for women, the idea of sexual passion was traced to the cause of original sin in the Garden of Eden. The long index will help finding some of the most fascinating passages. Handsomely bound in rich 1/4 red morocco over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt lettering within two compartments, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, previous owner's bookplate, endpapers toned. A very nice set.
