Description:
New York: Thomas Kelly, 1867. Martin Haverty (1809-1887), a journalist and librarian, originally published his histopry in 1860. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition, a massive tome, the Victorian version of a "coffee-table book," that would have had pride of place in the parlor (perhaps accompanied by the Holy Bible and the works of Josephus). Full leather binding, ruled and decoratively stamped, with five raised bands on the spine, filled with gilt. Clean text; 838 pages, with Appendix; gilt edges. Illustrated with steel engravings. Rubbed at the margins, gilt has dulled. The front cover has a name stamped in gilt; presumably the original owner, who would have special-ordered the binding. There is a pressed flower (presumed) laid into page 376. The front gutter is starting to split, a common problem with these large volumes. This one measures at 9.5"x12"x2-3/4" and weighs over 7.5 pounds; some extra postage will be required! Size: 4to - over… Read More
