Contemporary blind-stamped cloth boards with gilt lettering and small gilt device on spine. Spine title: "Peter Jones / and the / Ojebway / Indians / [device] / A. W. Bennett". Pale yellow endpapers. Page dimensions: 190 x 124mm (7 1/2" x 4 7/8"). Half leather with brown cloth, attractive gilt trimmed spine. Top edge gilt. Library marks on top and bottom edges of text block and rear of title page. Dampstains to plates in first half of book. Presentation copy inscribed by Jones' eldest son in 1872 to Sir Francis Hincks, at the time Federal Finance Minister. Signature (pp. 21-28) coming loose. Prelims dampstained and title page has pink marks. New endpapers.
With an introductory note by Rev. G. Osborn. Topics include Ojebway origins, mode of life, marriage, religion, councils, war, amusements, diseases, names, languages. Also discussion of controversial subjects like the evils introudced by whites, whisky, capacity for receiving instruction, opinion of the Indians respecting the Sovereign and people of Great Britain, future prospects.
