About This Item

Elliot Stock, London, first edition, 1887. Cloth, edges sprinkled red, 4to, 28 x 22 cm,. xiv, 379, [1] pp, plates, ills. Described by Graham Pollard in 1928 as "an indispensable book : it is by far the best and most complete book on the history of type foundries that has been written for any country". James Mosley, in an introduction to a later reprint of Pollard's revised edition, commented "Reed's great work, which stops short in 1830, twenty-two years before the date of his birth, is based not only on an intimate knowledge of surviving typographical materials, many of which were housed in the family typefoundry of Sir Charles Reed & Son, but also on the typefounders' specimens of which he published the most complete list that had yet been attempted. Later library buckram, with new endpapers, an ex-library copy with a gilt number on the spine, label on the front pastedown endpaper and unused call record on the front free endpaper, oval stamps on the title-page, 3 or 4 text-pages and versos of the plates, lightly age-toned, otherwise Good.
