Boston: I. Thomas (Isaiah Thomas) and E. T. Andrews, 1792. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair. 12mo. 216 pages. Hardcover bound in original paper-covered wooden boards. The binding is very worn, and the spine has perished, exposing the gatherings and stitching. The wooden boards are chipped, especially at the fore edges and along the bottom of the front cover. Much of the paper on the rear board is peeled or chipped off. The binding is still holding. Untrimmed. Complete with the copperplate engraved frontis and the footnote at page 77. Some foxing to the text. The title page and frontis are especially foxed and soiled. Early signature at the top edge of the front flyleaf appears to read "N. Pike," but there is some chipping right along the top edge at the signature. Rare.

Hardcover bound in original burgundy cloth. Now housed in a clear mylar jacket. The binding of the book has moderate rubbing and wear. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Text is a bit toned. A couple of pages have handwritten notations in the margins, presumably by Samuel A. Ashe. The notations are on pages pertaining to the Ashe family. Laid in loosely in a plastic sleeve is typed letter from publisher A. B. Caldwell to Capt. S. A. Ashe of Raleigh, North Carolina. The letter is on Caldwell Publishing Company letterhead and is on cheap paper that has several tears and crease. Two volumes bound in original blue cloth with spine titles in gilt. Moderate wear to the bindings. The bindings have some chips or abrasions in the cloth which seem to have been touched up with blue paint or coloring. This is more evident at the top edge of front cover on Volume II as well as on the side of its spine. Endpapers foxed. Text is toned but generally clean. Samuel Harrison Smith’s National Intelligencer newspaper for Friday, May 19, 1809, with a lengthy front page letter over three full columns in length by John Adams addressed to the publishers of the Boston Patriot News in response to a recently published criticism. In it Adams recounts in minute detail his reasoning and corresponding actions with respect to the 1799 diplomatic mission to France undertaken by his team of representatives, which eventually resulted in the Convention of 1800 or "Treaty Of Montefontaine," ending America’s Quasi-War with France, which was initiated by Talleyrand’s 1796 order allowing for the seizure of American merchant ships.
