London: John Camden Hotten, 1865. Pp. xiii, 529 + 48 plates (Colour frontispiece and title-page vignette; Plate #44 is actually a text illustration; Plate #45 by George Cruikshank is at p. 472 and not 499). Original gilt decorated, green cloth boards. Inscribed in green ink on the front blank: To ... as ardent a student as ever lived. / With the author's warmest greetings! E.H. Taylor, Jr. (grandson of the author)." Text block cracked at the center and held together by the headbands, old paper repair to a diagonal tear on title-page affecting the words Fortune-Telling, and Card-Sharping, also affecting the upper corner of the title-page vignette. Covers scuffed, tips rubbed, spinestrip almost detached, remnant of adhesive tape to spinestrip and upper cover (not discoloured), chipping to spine ends, with pieces missing from head of spine not affecting the text. Volume is complete and clean, as such, is a perfect candidate for restoration. A translation of the French work by Paul Boiteau D'Ambly with very considerable additions. Taylor died before completion of the work, hence the index and bibliography, frequently referred to in the text, are lacking.. Inscribed. First Edition. Hard Cover. 16 mo..
