Prepared under the direction of Francis A. Walker, Superintendent of the Census. 4to. Pp. 176. With 29 plates of b&w photos and diagrams, two color maps, and twelve sketch maps. Glossary. Maroon cloth softcover binding with gilt lettering on front cover. Slight dampstain to lower corner of preliminaries. Crease to front cover from having been folded-back. Wear with minor loss to head and tail of faded spine. Contemporary ownership name on the front pastedown. In sum, a presentable copy, better than most we've seen. Now protected with a new, removable acrylic cover. Contains the author's observations of the seal-rookeries of St. Paul and St. George Islands, 1872 to 1876. With notes and explanatory matter on the sea lion -- Eumetopias stelleri -- and the walrus of the Bering Sea -- Odoboenus obesus, as well as a history and description of the people of the Pribylov Islands.
