Early days in the City of Rutland, VT, are recalled through a mix of colorful tales, factual data and trivia, in this booklet, excerpted from the 1886 book History of Rutland County Vermont, edited by H.P. Smith and W.S. Rann. The 95 page booklet is printed on 8 1/2 x 11" 60# opaque paper. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Among the many subjects discussed are: Physical Features of the area; Early forts in the area; Charter, Grantees, etc.; Early settlements; Col. James Mead, the first settler; the 35 families who settled prior to 1774; Other early settlers; a list of freeholders from 1780; Early city officials; excerpts from the 1793-1828 diary of Major Gershom Cheney; Rutland Postoffices, with a list of postmasters; Churches and clergy; Schools and school officials; Medical, Dental and Legal Professions and practioners; Municipal History from J.A. Graham's writings; Businesses and Organizations; the Marble Interest of the town; Manufacturing Interests; West Rutland; Center Rutland; and other bits of history and trivia. There are mini biographies of prominent residents, as well as many incidental names throughout the booklet. There are some illustrations, but their quality is only fair.. Limited Edition Reprint.
