About This Item

1965. Early days in Titus County, Texas, are explored through a colorful retelling of historic events in this reprint of "History of Titus County" by Traylor Russell, originally published in 1965. The 3-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The booklet, printed on 60# opaque paper, contains 148 pages. However, because we use a 2-up format on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, it has the equivalent of 286 pages from the original book. Today Titus County includes the following communities: Mount Pleasant, Winfield, Miller's Cove, Argo and Cookville. Some of the more intriging chapter titles include: "The Convention Got Rough," Hazalum's Haint", "The Killing of the Horse Thieves," "Race Riots in Cookville," "Disturbing Religious Worship?", "Man, Look at that Bead," "The Cowley & Copeland Feud," "Then Came Oil!", and "Coming to Town on Saturday." There are also chapters pertaining to the Civil War, churches, outlaws, schools, etc. In addition to the history of the area, the book includes data on a number of individuals and families including the following: Lewis-Russell-Wall, Ripley, Tillman Smith, King-Stewart-Stephens, Dunston Traylor, David Snodgrass, Robert Andrew Cochran, John Henderson, Dr. J.F. Wilkinson, Solomon Hayes Price, J.W. Wardlow, John Evans Jr., Anderson Nevill, Henry W. Jones, Darby-Reynold-Old, William Justiss, William Ellis and John Riley Ellis, Rutherford-Hall-Rogers, Henry Clay Thouston, the Cook brothers, Wiley Benson, DeShields & Harris, Brantley, Harris-Black-Hood-Fleming-Mason, Jack Dillard, Thomas B. Caldwell, Gilpin-Nelson-Burford-Parham, Katie Myers, Denny, Archibald S. Cameron, John H. Dale, Ripley, Tom Black, Isaac T. Suggs, Joe S.
