About This Item
London: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1891. VOLUME ONE ONLY....Trinidad, one of Britain's last additions to her Caribbean empire, is also one of the most interesting histories. Emerging from a confused Franco Spanish background and retaining Spanish Law for some period, the island was under populated and underdeveloped at the time of the British conquest in 1797. A period of rapid expansion soon began, but within a short period colony was faced with the dislocations caused by the emancipation of the slaves. It is with this early period of British rule and the background to it that Lionel Mordaunt Fraser's exhaustive work is concerned. Thoroughly researched wherever possible, and indeed containing within it a wealth of excerpts from official documents and correspondence. It is in the best tradition of British 19th-century amateur history. This reprint, together with Joseph's history of Trinidad. Also reprinted in this series, will be welcomed by scholars as a valuable source of the history of this Caribbean island. Number 20 in the Cass library of West Indian studies. Two Volumes xii + 365pp + xx appendix plus Cass library of West Indian Studies Catalogue & viii + 380pp + vi appendix plus pullout sheet + Cass library of West Indian Studies Catalogue.
