Sir Douglas Mawson, geologist and explorer, was born on May 5, 1882 at Shipley, Yorkshire, second son of Robert Ellis Mawson, before the family moved to Rooty Hill, near Sydney, in 1884. He went on to become one of Australia's greatest explorers, noted primarily for his extensive work in Antarctica. His exploration of the continent spanned the years between 1907 and 1931. He died in 1958. This book is a special facsimile edition of the abridged popular edition, first published in 1930 and long out of print. Mawson's ripping yarn of discovery and adventure in the Antarctic has all the elements of a great story - pioneering deeds, acts of great courage, scenes of foolhardiness and heartstopping rescues.
