Second edition. John Murray. London. 1873. Octavo. xix, 340pp. Engraved frontis., folding map (with closed tears and small hole), 9 further plates. Recent quarter calf, marbled boards, spine in six compartments with raised bands and gilt lettering and blind motifs. All edges marbled. p.242 misnumbered 224. Light toning, occasional marks.

George Chaworth Musters (1841-1879) "The King of Patagonia" led a remarkable life. Born in Naples, he was orphaned by the age of four, and brought up by his uncle Hammond who had sailed with Fitzroy aboard "The Beagle". He lived and travelled throughout South America, and was recognised by the RGS for his contributions to the geographical knowledge of the continent.

His wife Mary is the ' Mary ' of Byron's poem, 'The Dream.'
