New York: Viking Press, 1943. 149pp. Burnt orangle cloth. states "First Published 1943" on the copyright page, indicating a true first edition, first printing. There are white and brown mottling spots on the front panel, less so on the rear panel. Previous owner's name on the front pastedown, foxing to the endpapers, and the text block and illustrations are in excellent conditio. The Price-clipped pictorial jacket (Boy eating donuts from the donut maker) has minor wear to the extremities, and hand-written letters on the upper right corner of the rear panel. in mylar sleeve. This book "tells the story of a boy living in Centerburg, Ohio. Along with a cast of unforgettable characters, Homer gets caught in some outrageous situations that include comic books, unstoppable doughnut machines, a better mouse trap, and even robbery!". Synopsis

Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. The first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder , McCloskey was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Journey Cake, Ho! by Ruth Sawyer.  He was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.  You can see some of his best-loved characters immortalized as statues in Boston's Public Garden and Lentil Park in Hamilton, Ohio.
