About This Item

London, printed for J. Cadwel, and are to be sold at the Royal Exchange, and in Westminster-Hall, MDCLXI. [1661, i.e. 1660].. Very proper for these times, when men are butting, and pushing, and goring, and horning one another. Also an appendix concerning women and jealousie. FIRST EDITION 1661, small 8vo, approximately 165 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, LACKING FRONTISPIECE, SUPPLIED IN MODERN FACSIMILE, plus a blank leaf at beginning and end, and the leaf following the title page (Dedication?), pages: [12], 1-84, followed by imprimatur leaf, catchword on *7v is a printer's error, pagination irregular but text collated and guaranteed complete, bound in modern full calf, blind ruled border and decorative panelling to covers, raised bands and blind rules to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. 2 lines written in Latin on colophon page, occasional minor mark to text or margins. A good copy with facsimile frontispiece as noted. Wing attributes authorship to George Rogers (1618-1697) a medical man who trained in Padua and then went into practice in London, eventually becoming the president of the College of Physicians. However in ODNB this is not listed amongst his works. In the Preface to this serio-comic work, published to coincide with celebrations for the restoration of the monarchy (and in an act of remarkable prescience about what would notoriously prove to be one of the major preoccupations of that new anti-puritan era), seeing 'the general verge of the people to merryment', the author expresses the hope that 'this piece of drollery' on the subject of cuckoldry might prove 'acceptable' to his readers". The first part runs to page 35, The Appendix on Women and Jealousy is larger occupying pages 37 to 84. ESTC R209943 list 2 copies in UK libraries and 6 in USA; G. Thomason, Catalogue of the Pamphlets, Books Relating to the Civil War, Volume 2, page 349, E. 1808, (3.). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
