Boston: Little Brown and Company. 1953. [Naval Adventure] INSCRIBED FIRST US EDITION, from the Forester Family Archive. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[8] 325 [3]. INSCRIBED by Forester in black ink to his wife, Dorothy, on the front flyleaf. Bookplate of the Forester, Troughton-Smith family archive to pastedown. Publisher's green cloth titled in gilt to spine. With the illustrated dust-jacket priced at $3.50. Toning to edges, a little light general wear. Jacket sunned to spine, with creasing, chipping and a rectangle of loss to the upper edge of the front panel. Internally clean and fresh. As we have discovered with the family-related Hornblower titles, the jacket suffered somewhat, nevertheless a lovely association copy, housed in a leather-spined clamshell box.
Synopsis
Hornblower and the Atropos is a 1953 historical novel by C.S. Forester. In this novel, Horatio Hornblower is assigned to the Atropos, the smallest vessel in the English navy that qualifies to be commanded by a post-Captain, as he hunts for treasure in the Mediterranean Sea.
