Vintage photo illustrated endpapers. 219 pp. with glossary, bibliography, index. Profusely illustrated throughout with vintage black and white and contemporary color photographs, maps. The second of two volumes on the "Bridles of Americas". This volumes focuses on the historical documentation showing when (and in most cases from which adjoining group) the first horses reached more than 125 tribes of Native American. Though the Spanish brough metal bits of forged iron, jingling with chains of silver and gold to the Americas beginning in 1519, Native Americans, also faced with the promlems of horse control but lacking in the technology to produce iron bits, invented a host of alternate solutions. More than 500 color photographs in this volume illustrate the American Indian inventions.
