New York: Random House Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. Reprint. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Hardcover, large format quarto in tan cloth boldly lettered in black, in original publisher's dust-jacket. Dust-jacket printed with 295/295 on front inner flap and a price of $2.95 [for "The King's Stilts" by Seuss] on lower rear inner flap. Circa 1960 printing with "Cat in the Hat" being last title printed on rear dust-jacket panel [published 1958]. No previous ownership marks. No writing or marking of any find internally or to cover. Book is clean, square, tight and unmarked. Dust-jacket is age soiled and has two small tears on rear panel, one at top and one at bottom, both of which have old clear tape repairs on blank verso. Minor wear to spine ends and tips and general age soiling as mentioned, but overall a complete and attractive dust-jacket, now in clear acetate covers. A near fine or better vintage printing in a fair to good dust-jacket. .
Synopsis
Horton Hatches the Egg is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, first published in 1940. The book, along with Horton Hears a Who later provided the thrust of the plot for the Broadway musical Seussical. The character Horton appeared again in Horton Hears a Who!, published in 1954. Plot summary The book concerns an elephant named Horton, who is convinced by an irresponsible bird named Mayzie to sit on her egg while she takes a short "break", which proves to last for months.
