About This Item

This PRISTINE-like-new 190-page FIRST EDITION hardbound copy of this scarce and important Old Testament Bible commentary gives verse-by-verse exposition. Dr. Mays is biblical, scholarly, and conservative. This book is part of the critically acclaimed, The Old Testament Library series, by the Westminster Press. James L. Mays comments on the only prophet who both lived and prophesied in the Northern Kingdom of Israel. A general introduction is provided along with a bibliography, followed by verse-by-verse commentary. He shows Hosea's theology one that has been shaped by covenant between God and Israel. It is a book that demonstrates that despite the repeated unfaithfulness of Israel, which ultimately causes their doom, God maintains his unrequited love for them through it all. James L. Mays was Professor Emeritus of Hebrew and Old Testament Interpretation at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia.

This volume is in excellent condition with the dust jacket preserved with an Archival-Safe, flexible Polyester Book covering. If there were not the previous owner's initials written on the inside along with an Ex Libris label, you would think this was a brand new book! All pages are intact, not marred by any markings, notes, or highlighting. The cover appears brand new.

This description can be found online: ''The work is divided into a short introduction dealing with the man, the time, the sayings, the message and the book, followed by a selective bibliography and a commentary in 37 sections with headings which will help in the study of the book. It can be highly recommended' (Jewish Quarterly). 'Though the author is well acquainted with Hebrew grammar and philology these are nowhere obtruded on the reader. Similarly, questions of textual reading do not claim the focus of attention…the more technical material is put in the footnote where it will not divert attention from the exposition of the fundamental message of these prophets. A fine volume which is an important enrichment of our exegetical literature' (H. H. Rowley in The British Weekly).'
