London: Heath Cranton Limited, 1925. Octavo, pp. [1-12] 13-291 [292: blank], five inserted plates with uncredited color illustrations, original pictorial blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in red. First edition. Collects five stories, two of novella length, set in the Middle East. Some are set in ancient Persian times, others after the establishment of Islam, all affecting an antique atmosphere by the use of Elizabethan pronouns. A few have traces of the fantastic -- Satan, djinni, dreams. Of more interest than the text are the illustrations, which combine the flat perspective of Pharaonic Egyptian art with the bold flat colors of poster art, for which the 1920s was a golden age. A bright, very good copy. (#147358)
