About This Item

Faber and Faber, 1965. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG/VG. 1st Edition 14 x 22.2 cm red cloth with black and gilt stamped titles to the spine. 175[1]pp with original unclipped jacket designed by Michael Ayrton priced at 25s net. The boards have been well protected by the jacket and are clean with bright titles. There is a bruise to the bottom corner of the front board and a little shelf wear to the bottom edge. Internally, there is a bookplate to the front pastedown but otherwise the pages are clean. The dust jacket, which is now protected in a removable clear cover (not shown), has a little rubbing to the head of the spine, edges and corners together with some toning to the spine but is complete and presents very well. A very collectable copy of this 1st Edition of collected essays. Rainford & Parris Books welcomes enquiries, so please do not hesitate to ask if you require further images or have any questions. All books are packaged with great care.

Synopsis

The Hot Gates is the title of a collection by William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies. The collection contains his childhood recollections "Billy the Kid" and "The Ladder and the Tree", and his essay "Fable", which answered questions about Lord of the Flies. The book starts out with an essay on the Battle of Thermopylae, which can be translated from ancient Greek to English as "hot gates", thus giving it the title.
