A contest with a prize of $1000 offered by the publisher to any reader who could guess the authorship of the twelve stories within. Some of the authors invited included Winston Churchill, Sarah Orne Jewett, George W. Cable, John Kendrick Bangs. Mark Twain was invited but did not contribute. First edition (first printing). Spine a bit faded and head chipped, else a near fine copy. Blank guessing coupon still attached. Former owner's stamp on front pastedown, otherwise clean inside with no highlighting or underlining. No dust jacket.
