Synopsis
James Kelman was born in Glasgow in 1946 and is an influential writer of novels, plays and political essays. In his 1994 Booker Man prizewinning novel, How Late It Was, How Late , we are introduced to the protagonist, Sammy Samuels. An ex-convict with a penchant for shoplifting, Sammy awakens in a lane and tries to remember the two-day drinking binge that landed him there. Within the first few minutes of the story he is beaten blind by police and struggles to get by in a world of unrelenting tension and danger. This realistic portrayal of a man, written in stream of consciousness style is an unwavering novel that the reader won’t easily forget.
